Effects of Coarse Woody Debris on Soil Temperature and Water Content in Two Reconstructed Soils in Reclaimed Boreal Forest

چکیده

Coarse woody debris (CWD) and cover soils are used to expedite ecological processes in reclaimed boreal forests after oil sands mining. Soil water content soil temperature considered key factors for revegetation during mine reclamation as they impact surface atmosphere interactions plant growth. However, the effects of CWD on not well studied. This study assessed size (large, small) type (spruce: Picea mariana, aspen: Populus tremuloides) two constructed with forest floor-mineral mix (FMM) peat-mineral (PMM)) at sites. Annual summer precipitation showed year-to-year variability; mean air did not. had a greater moderating than CWD, PMM having stronger influence FMM. Adding increased more FMM PMM, effect was mostly observed months. In spruce small associated content, whereas there no distinct differentiation between FFM. suggests application would be beneficial reclamation.

Postfire dynamics of black spruce coarse woody debris in northern boreal forest of Quebec

In this study, postfire coarse woody debris (CWD) dynamics in northern Quebec, Canada, were assessed using a 29-year chronosequence. Postfire woody-debris storage, decomposition rates, and variation of nitrogen and carbon contents of black spruce CWD (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP) are estimated. The decomposition rate for postfire snags is exceptionally slow (k = 0.00), while the decomposition rat...

Interactions of temperature and moisture with respiration from coarse woody debris in experimental forest canopy gaps

Coarse woody debris (CWD) and canopy gaps are thought to be important structural components that influence forest ecosystem processes, yet few studies have assessed whether these features interact to influence decay dynamics, and we know of none that does so under controlled experimental canopy gap conditions. By manipulating forest structure to create canopy openings, we tested whether canopy ...

Fuel treatment effects on snags and coarse woody debris in a Sierra Nevada mixed conifer forest

Snags and coarse woody debris are important elements of the structure and function of mixed conifer forests in the Sierra Nevada. In this paper, we report on the impacts of several replicated fuel treatments including, prescribed fire, commercial thinning (crown thinning and thinning from below) followed by rotary mastication of understory trees, mechanical followed by prescribed fire, and cont...

Coarse Woody Debris Increases Microbial Community Functional Diversity but not Enzyme Activities in Reclaimed Oil Sands Soils.

Forest floor mineral soil mix (FMM) and peat mineral soil mix (PMM) are cover soils commonly used for upland reclamation post open-pit oil sands mining in northern Alberta, Canada. Coarse woody debris (CWD) can be used to regulate soil temperature and water content, to increase organic matter content, and to create microsites for the establishment of microorganisms and vegetation in upland recl...
